Prompt Engineering

The practice of writing effective instructions for AI — really just the management skill of briefing, applied to a machine.

Prompt engineering is the craft of instructing AI systems to get reliable, useful output. Despite the technical name, its core is a familiar management skill: writing a clear brief. Goal, audience, tone, constraints, format, and an example of what good looks like — the same elements that make a consultant's brief work make a prompt work.

Executives should care for two reasons. First, quality: the difference between a vague one-liner and a structured brief is often the difference between unusable filler and board-ready output, using the exact same model. Second, scale: good prompts are reusable assets. When a proven brief is saved as a team template, everyone gets the quality of your best communicator.

Concrete example: 'Summarise this' produces a generic paragraph. 'You are our head of insights; summarise this interview in five bullets — pain, quote, opportunity, risk, follow-up — and flag anything contradicting our roadmap' produces something a leadership team can act on.
